The Variants #1 is not only a beautifully-constructed new look at the Marvel multiverse that fans know and love, it's a truly stunning and revolutionary new chapter in the ongoing story of Jessica Jones. Gail Simone's script brings the heartfelt, but world-weary tone that Jessica uniquely embodies, while laying the groundwork for a fascinating new twist on doppelgangers from another universe. When coupled with Phil Noto's effortlessly cool and timeless art, The Variants is an absolute knockout for Marvel Comics, and I could not be more excited to see what else it has in store.

A Jessica Jones mystery is a glowing example of how engaging a story can be when the creative team understand the character, the characters history and that characters place in her own universe PERFECTLY. Exceptional character writing complimented by artistic nuance make for a thoroughly engaging opening installment to what promises top be a fascinating next chapter in one of Marvel's most believable characters.

    You Don't Read Comics

And so a private detective is thrown into the kind of weirdness that has become the hallmark of various different incarnations of the Marvel Universe. The clever bit about the weirdness is that Simone never lets Jessica Jones stop being Jessica Jones, even when the weird sets in. Run into a perfect copy of herself in her own apartment? Doesnt matter if it IS her, shes going to beat the hell out of herself for trespassing on her own home. Simone has a brilliant grasp of Jess. This is going to be fun.

It is a rare thing for a creative team to pick up a character synonymous with another creative team and not only match the work that introduced that character but surpass it. With The Variants, Simone and Noto have managed that feat, producing the most interesting and accessible Jessica Jones story ever told in the comics.

Jessica Jones is having a Crisis and our enjoyment is Infinite. Gail Simone may be the ideal writer to create a team book only starring Jessica Jones. Phil Noto might just be giving us the best work of his career. The Variants #1 is just the beginning of the madness but we are already getting the adventure of many lifetimes. Phil Noto is just perfect as the artist for this series fully capturing the range of human and heroic moments. (...) Phil Noto can make even the simplest conversation dynamic and somehow makes us feel every moment in the action scenes. This combination of Simone’s off over the top humor with Noto’s more understated style is an unexpected creative collaboration that really works. Noto and Simone are like players in an orchestra where each of their skills are lifted by the other to the point that the entire work is better than the sum of its parts. Every part of this book is effortless, interesting character work with a fascinating examination of the many parts which make up Jessica Jones.

    The Super Powered Fancast

The Story: Gail Simone delivers a powerful, fun and engaging first issue. I love the tone of the story and where it begins with Jessica emotionally and psychologically. The commentary and inner monologue are fantastic throughout and I love the mystery that is being formed and its connection to her. The final scene of the issue hooked me and I cannot wait to see where this story goes next. The Art: Noto delivers some fantastic art in the first issue. I love the tone of the art as well as its focus on Jessica through close up shots and facial expressions. The art is a great showcase of mood and emotion.

    But Why Tho?

The Variants #1 is a tale that's perfect for Jessica Jones fans and manages to find a fresh take on the multiverse concept. I've been looking forward to this book ever since it was announced, and it more than lived up to the hype. Just about the only way it could be more perfect is if Krysten Ritter was somehow able to narrate it.

A great first issue. Rather like London buses, we wait awhile for a good story featuring Jessica Jones, then three Jessicas all turn up at once. Simone is having as much fun writing this it seems as we are reading it. Enthusiasm always shines through.

The Variants #1 is an excellent debut that'll leave you guessing as to what is reality and what's not. Is this leading to some multiversal adventure or is this Jessica breaking from reality? Simone delivers teases and you'll want to come back for more by the end of the issue. Just when you think a concept of infinite possibilities can't deliver anything new, this creative team surprises us and does exactly that.

An all-star creative team does a very good job of introducing us to Jessica Jones and her new mystery.

    Geek'd Out

In this new limited series by superstar creators Gail Simone and Phil Noto, The Variants teases an intriguing premise: hard-boiled gumshoe Jessica Jones teaming up with variants of herself from alternate universes to solve a case. Given the widespread popularity of the multiverse in fiction right now, it’s a canny move from Marvel editorial, even if they’re not exactly lacking for similar stories in their publishing slate recently. But based on this first issue, it seems like Simone and Noto’s approach is less Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and more Everything Everywhere All at Once, which is absolutely the right call.
