What starts out as a fairly traditional noir/murder mystery becomes something involving a cult, an ancient Chinese demigod, and the booming movie industry. I don’t want to go so far as to say that these elements don’t belong in the book. It is an Iron Fist comic, after all. The fact that I enjoyed the issue much more as a simple noir tale is just proof that Swiercynski didn’t bring them together as well as he could have. In many ways the esoteric elements drag this issue down, when they should really be the defining element of the book.

Still, Orson Randall himself is as compelling as ever. His latest adventure looks good, and it has plenty to offer fans despite all its faults. If I’m required to wait a while for the next installment of the main book, I can think of far worse ways to pass the time.
