Bounty Hunters #30 is a full meal that never stops giving. It gives weight to every single story told so far in not just Bounty Hunters, but gives validation to readers of other series like Crimson Reign. Sacks is the beneficiary of those seeds, but he has been planting the groundwork for this type of whirlwind across several issues, and to see it fulfilled was a marvel. This is a heavy issue that breaks a man, but also builds him back up. It’s such a simple idea, executed in such a chilling way. Of course, the secret cheat code to challenge rich character work with Darth Vader’s crimson blade doesn’t hurt. What a hook for the next issue. What an issue. Bounty Hunters is suddenly firing on all cylinders.

This was a fantastic issue with so many brilliant visuals. I loved the final page, which is obviously setting the stage for the next issue where Valance will likely face the consequences of his actions. I loved the sequence where Valance is speaking with his superior officer who has a thing for him and tries to talk him around. The best part of this is seeing Darth Vader’s ominous shadow enter the bridge of the Star Destroyer.

Overall, this story arc is starting to pay some real dividends and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

As Beilert Valance reunites with his former crew of bounty hunters, he’s faced with a depressing truth, though one that could prove to be his path to freedom from the grasp of Darth Vader. Given that this series has historically been a convoluted experience based on how many one-dimensional characters it has been tasked with navigating, this current storyline could potentially finally right these wrongs, as the only figure that really matters all that much is Beilert Valance, who is arguably the only character that any fans cared about in the first place. Luckily, after years of having to keep track of bland characters and expected bounty-hunting stories, we’re starting to see the series start to lean into its strengths with this story focusing on Valance and also incorporating justified spurts of exciting action. With a conflict between Valance and Vader being teased, the upcoming issue could finally redeem the overall title.

The penultimate issue is pretty much what you expected. I still can’t believe they are finally going to end this series but other stories beckon in the galaxy a long time ago and far far away…
