You’ve seen Captains Benjamin Sisko and Worf with their crews of the U.S.S. Theseus and Defiant stop the fascist, god-killing clone Kahless II from declaring war on non-followers across the galaxy in a brutal battle on Qo’noS. But you haven’t seen it from the eyes of the man, the myth, the legend, Lieutenant Junior Grade Shaxs!

From the writer behind the best-selling Lower Decks comics series, Ryan North, with esteemed artist Derek Charm (Jughead and Marvel’s The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl), comes a 30-page standalone tie-in to the Star Trek: Day of Blood event (Star Trek FCBD 2023, Day of Blood #1, Star Trek #11 and 12, and Defiant #6 and 7) detailing the Bajoran’s beast-mode brawl and showcasing all the behind-the-scenes Klingon-zealot butt-kicking in full animated glory!

Star Trek: Day of Blood—Shaxs’ Best Day is one hell of a good time. The jokes are thick and fast and it’s rather fun seeing what a good day looks like for the legendary Lt Junior Grade Shax. I look forward to any sequels. If there is one.

The Story: With everything in the Day of Blood storyline being so dark and suspenseful, I enjoyed seeing some frivolity and fun. North delivers a fun, energetic and action packed story in this issue. Focusing the story on Shaxs is a great touch and the characters connection to the more comedic elements of Trek serve the story well. An incredibly fun and thrilling adventure.

The Art: Charm brings all of the fun and frenzy of the Lower Decks world to life on the page. A great looking issue that brings all the fun and charm of the story to the reader.

Known for his work on The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Adventure Time, Ryan North brings his fan-favorite sensibilities to Star Trek in a way that only he can. Taking one of Star Trek: Lower Decks’ most unique characters and giving it a proper humor comic treatment, this one-shot is a must read for fans and one that even non-viewers can appreciate. Artist Derek Charm recreates the look of the animated series’ aesthetic with great detail, giving you what feels like a lost episode in your hands.

Action-packed, humorous, and just plain fun. “Shaxs’ Best Day” is a joy to read, especially for fans of Lower Decks.

    Set The Tape

Rather than being full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, the ongoing Day Of Blood event has been a bold and worthy experiment, being able to use a far larger canvas than could be used on television for various reasons. The stewardship of Star Trek’s comics incarnation certainly appears to be in safe hands if all the creative talent involved here can continue in the same vein. Far better to be adventurous and risk failure, than to simply play safe and tread water.
