Operation Sunshine is the kind of comic that comes along once in a while and within the first few pages, I know it’s going to be something special. The art is a beautiful juxtaposition between horror and humor with a story that is grounded but lays the foundation for a much larger mythology. Most importantly though, from cover to cover, Operation Sunshine is a monster-fighting, dialog-driven romp that puts a fun new spin on a folklore creature I thought had long been bled dry. This book makes vampires a vibe again and I’m here for it!

A transformative and entertaining spin on the same old vampire story.

What a fun story for the Halloween season! It wasn’t perfect by any means, there were transitions between scenes that weren’t always clear or evident and the reader is bombarded with plot elements without much explanation —but once you get past the structure issues, the story itself is pure horror fun at its roots. The cartoonish art is a great complement to the tone of the story — never making anything too dark or scary that would turn non-horror fans off, but still scratching the itch for anyone wanting a twisted visual to go with their vampire story. Overall it’s a great read for this time of year, warts and all.

In Operation Sunshine #1—written by The Last Podcast on the Left hosts Henry Zebrowski and Marcus Parks with artwork by David Rubin, colors by K.J. Diaz, and letters by Ferran Delgado—the debut sets up the unexpected journey of two vampire-like creatures known as “bugs,” Hex and Steve, who find themselves embroiled in a quest to find a magical relic from an “OV” (original vampire) and to be cured of the vampirism in the process. It’s a fun premise with a fresh take on vampire lore and while the execution is a little rough at points, the issue sets up a blood sucking horror story that feels just new enough to venture into the light with.
