    You Don't Read Comics

Shalvey isnt doing anything terribly original with the series. Taken on their own, all of the different plot elements in the issue have been seen before. Its the way that Shalvey is placing them on the page and juxtaposing them against each otherTHAT is what makes Old Dog what it is. Given the right momentum, Shalvey could really do something with the series. The current plot arc ends with the sixth issue. Its been a fun ride so far. If Shalvey can stick the landing on the sixth issue, Old Dog might turn into something great.

Seriously — this issue is a masterclass of subtle narrative turns and visual trickery, where Shalvey lures us into an exciting story we experience eagerly and with jaw firmly on the floor. I have some idea of where it’s going, but I mostly know that it’s “forward into something bizarre and wonderful.” Issue #5 cements Old Dog as a spy series for anyone who couldn’t care less for gadgets and cocktails and loves the magic a good mystery can invoke in our lives. It’s daring, inventive, and deeply committed to shocking and surprising in the most thoughtful and inventive ways.

The already-great pieces of Old Dog crystalize into something gut-wrenching and compelling in this installment. As Jack begins to question what’s next—and grows horrified by the answer—the series is catapulted into a territory that feels genuinely surprising without being unprecedented. Declan Shalvey’s work on this series continues to be as excellent as ever, and leaves me eager to see where this unconventional noir goes next.

This latest issue of Old Dog hit a good balance between sci-fi action and spy thriller intrigue. I’m excited to see where the series goes from here after dropping a big twist about Jack and his role within the Black Circle. Declan Shavley has been on target with Old Dog so far, delivering his signature flair for action within a storyline that keeps you on your toes. It’s a series proving to have plenty more dark secrets to reveal.
