While not a comprehensive or encompassing series finale, this issue does a solid job of laying more ground for Secret Wars and showcasing Doctor Doom at his most awe-inspiring and compelling.

    Comics: The Gathering

New Avengers #33 is not a conclusion but rather a necessary exposition issue heading into Secret Wars. The comic succeeds in bringing Hickman’s excellent handle on Doom to the forefront, making the twists and story beats all the better.

    The Kliq Nation

Majority of New Avengers #33 is a three-person story (Doctor Doom, Doctor Strange, and Molecule Man). We get many answers before Secret Wars begins. Some of these answers will make you say “HUH?!” Make sure to read this before opening Avengers #44.

New Avengers #33 had a ton of promise but hits with a mediocre thud as the issue circles around itself and digs deep into some odd aspects of the storyline. The artwork is middle-of-the-road at best and not Deodato’s best work by any means, which detracts from the momentum of this issue and it’s ability to close out the volume of this series and drive readers into Secret Wars. New Avengers stumbles along until its conclusion and I hope to see better in Secret Wars.
