    You Don't Read Comics

Monstress continues to be a thing of terrible beauty that is drawn straight out of another realm in ways that so many other comics are only attempting. The darkness is overwhelming, and the heroism of the central characters rests on a towering level as they confront so much on so many levels…many of them scarcely able to be articulated in any kind of coherent language. It’s like nothing else being done in any other format.

Monstress is never a bad comic, but when it’s good it’s very, very good which is the case with Monstress #45. After a few months break, this is a packed issue that, while it still divides the story into three areas – ghost Maika, Ren, and Zinn-Maika-Kippa, it wisely manages the split by weighing things with the Zinn of it all being central and everything else and the associated escalating danger coming off of that. Things get vastly worse in this issue for everyone at all, but Marjorie Liu does an expert job of tempering the descent with a lot of emotional moments. There’s a rich complexity to this story, but especially this issue. It’s a fantastic return.

    Comic Crusaders

It’s not a perfect comic by any means but it is a fun read. However, this is one of those comics that I would wait to get the TPB instead of reading individual issues, and that way I can get a mouthful of this story instead of nibbling away at a very interesting albeit complex story.
