The closest thing to “Pet Avengers” that Marvel has published in a while, Marvel Unleashed is an impossibly-charming jaunt through the Marvel universe. Chronicling a team-up between Lucky the Pizza Dog, Redwing the Falcon, Chewie the Flerken, and a few new pets, Kyle Starks’ script is equal parts surprising, sentimental, and action-packed. Jesus Hervas’ art renders all of the pets in a photorealistic, but still larger-than-life manner, allowing for some sweetness and motion in some key moments. This debut issue absolutely charmed me, and I’m excited to see what else is in store for this title.

    Capes & Tights

Marvel Unleashed is a brilliant comic book that is sure to delight animal lovers and Marvel enthusiasts. The artwork is stunning, the writing is clever and lighthearted, and the characters are all unique and charming. It’s a refreshing departure from the usual spandex-clad superheroes, and it’s clear that Starks and Hervas poured their hearts and souls into this project.

If you need more dogs in your life, check out Marvel Unleashed. Starks and Hervas are putting in the work to establish the characters up front in this first issue with the promise of some epic supervillain vs. super-pet action in future issues.

    Comic Watch

Marvel Unleashed #1is one of many reoccurring attempts at bringing back the animal-driven narrative trope made popular eons ago, and may just be one of the best. With incredibly comedic writing and a great showing of comic book technique in both the writing and art, this debut issue is a great debut for both young and new readers alike.

    Major Spoilers

Marvel Unleashed #1 is a book that delivers on its promise of being an adventure starring some of the pets of the Marvel U. The characters play off of each other well, and the story covers a lot of ground without feeling rushed. Some of the characters do feel one-note and there are some pretty blunt attempts to generate emotions in the reader that don’t completely land.
