    Comic Watch

    Knight Terrors – Night’s End #1 wraps up the Knight Terror storyline and sows the seeds for the next event later this year.

    As an event, Knight Terrors, for the most part, was an interesting and introspective look into the dreams of the various characters of the DC Universe. The event, in its shortened length, struggled at times to clearly define Insominia’s motives and endgame plans leaving this issue to do some heavy lifting in wrapping up the story and returning the DC Universe back to its regularly scheduled ongoing series and storylines.

    Knight Terrors concludes with sacrifices made, and one of those will haunt the DCU for a bit. How will images of heroes look after nightmares have distorted them? Night’s End gives us a twist on being careful about your dreams and reminds us that heroes can come from anywhere. Get ready for characters to move on and an introduction that will have you wondering who is under the Helmet of Hate.

    But Why Tho?

    Knight Terrors: Night’s End #1 gives the event the energetic ending it deserves. It’s satisfying to have a linear pathway in a storyline that has largely moved sideways and backwards in order to make sense. The battle is strongly paced and powers the story into a definitive ending. The main stories of the crossover events are given conclusions, including character arcs, but that is at the expense of what was set up for this final showdown. The main trio are the priority, and they’re all given a satisfying sense of peace. The dread that was felt at the end of some of the tie-ins when their nightmares followed them into reality was largely for nothing, as the payoff didn’t match that horror. That said, the final moments are more focused on the wider storyline that DC is cooking.

    Knight Terrors comes full circle with a satisfying final issue. It succeeds in doing the heavy lifting required to tie up loose ends as well as tying in to both the wider Dawn of DC arc and the upcoming Beastworld event for later in the year.

    Comic Crusaders

    In the end, despite some shortcomings, there are plenty of thrills and surprises in this issue. Parts are straightforward, parts are mind-bending, parts are action-packed, and parts are emotional. There’s even a twist upon the twist that comes completely out of left-field. And as the dust clears, it’s safe to say that the DC Universe has changed forever. If you’ve followed the series to this point, you must check out the conclusion.

    The Super Powered Fancast

    The Story: Williamson has done some great work with the series but this finale was disappointing in many ways. As a fan of the DC universe, introducing concepts like dreams and nightmares into any long form story invites connections to the Sandman universe and to have none of those elements in this series where there is clearly a canonical connection is disappointing. With the continuation of that world in comics recently, to not have those stories connect is a missed opportunity that sours the ending of this series for me.

    The Art: The artists deliver some well detailed and visually entertaining action, but some of the more action heavy moments looked messy.

    Dark Knight News

    Although I may not have gotten all of the things I wanted from this event, I certainly got my money’s worth. Knight Terrors: Night’s End wraps up this unique crossover very well, and delivers a satisfying end to a very bad dream.

    The fallout from this tale will be felt for a good long while by our heroes… but will this effect the wider world?

    Only time will tell!

    After a rewarding main event book, and shutting down all the main books to have two months of the event support books, this event was actually unrewarding. Of the support books I read, it made it seem that most characters would have more to do in this epilogue issue. In reality this event conclusion like the main book was focused on Deadman and Sandman. Most characters had only a footnote appearance after the main conflict was over.

    These post “Dawn of Justice” events have been focused on breaking down the Justice League and people’s trust in heroes. Some of this mistrust has been orchestrated by Amanda Waller, while some of the events like Knight Terrors have been to her fortune.

    DC’s compact event wraps up as DC’s heroes deal with the heroes in the real world. The overall concept is nice and the groundwork it lays out is good but as far as events go, this is a knight terror that doesn’t stay with you. The artwork goes from interesting to what am I looking at quickly and the beats themselves never quite hit. Even the intriguing ending concerning Batman feels a bit undone rather too quickly in the kick-off to Gotham War. Overall, it comes off as just a way to get from point A to point C instead of an event story that stands on its own.

    The Comicbook Dispatch

    Knight Terrors: Night’s End #1 finally wraps up this event that held most of the DC Comic Universe hostage this summer. The character’s voices were written poorly, the art was unclear, the beginning page count was wasteful, the Deadman angle was lackluster, and the solution was too convenient. The Knight Terrors Event was not a success and didn’t move the needle for this reviewer at all. I get the attempt by Williamson to try to recreate a horror movie-esque vibe, however, using Deadman and a brand new villain as the cornerstone for this event without prior setup, only hindered the title.

    Knight Terrors: Night’s End #1 concludes by merely advancing a future style for a future event that right now means…. nothing. As for the entire Knight Terrors Event, it’s a hard pass. You could completely skip this event without any repercussions making the actual event even less important to the landscape of DC Comics.

    This was not my preferred art style, and the story becomes a touch confusing at times. Overall, this is still a good comic, the ones before it were just very good.

    You Don't Read Comics

    There HAD been rather a lot of action throughout the crossover featuring quite a few characters who all showed a great deal of promise, but none of them feature all that prominently in the final chapter of the crossover, so their presence earlier on feels kind of empty for the most part. Deadman comes across with some degree of power, but there really isn’t much on the page aside from him and his big, final tussle with Insomnia.

    Writer Joshua Williamson has had a rough time with this event. He’s failed to make Insomnia much of a threat. He’s touting the “heroes are a danger to everyone and their families” based on his negligence. Insomnia’s weak motivation makes him come off half-baked as his nightmare versions of the heroes feels way too familiar to other recent DC events.

    I’ve been a huge Howard Porter fan. Even some of his most recent work on The Flash was solid. That’s not the case with this issue as the art features inconsistent takes on characters from one page to the next. Faces look pretty bad and the panels seem cluttered with too much going on.

    Knight Terrors: Night’s End #1 is exactly what you would expect from an event finale. It’s full of spectacle, grandiose speeches, and a big moment to make it “important” to canon. None of it resonates particularly deeply, but that’s not why you’re here. This exists to wrap up a two month long intermission in DC Comics’ stories as loudly as possible. I’d make a joke about it being a nightmare, but honestly it doesn’t leave enough of an impression to warrant that sort of reaction.

    Knight Terrors: Night’s End #1 delivers one message loud and clear – the true nightmare belongs to the person who spent money on this mess. The story execution makes little sense, most of the ideas set up in the previous issues and tie-ins don’t pay off, and the art is terrible. DC Comics owes everyone who paid money to buy this event an apology.

    Much like the “Knight Terrors” event overall, Knight Terrors: Night’s End #1 is a mess that ultimately was all spectacle and no sense with pieces of story sort of haphazardly strung together in an attempt to offer up some semblance of conclusion. The issue sees what’s supposed to be some sort of final showdown between Deadman and Insomnia, but really just serves to shoddily try to set up some big important canonical shift for the former while limply trying to make some weak headway into the tired “but superheroes are really bad guys” trope. It’s fractured, messy, and jumbled with pages of art that are often too crowded for there to be much in the way of visual storytelling. Even the attempt to make the reader feel something for the “villain”—and I use that in quotes because Insomnia is a joke at best—is just flat. At this point, the only good thing about this is that the nightmare of this weird little event is finally over.
