But Why Tho?
Extreme Venomverse #1 is a great barometer of how a similar story can change with minor tweaks. All three are based on the same concept of Venom, yet they couldn’t be more varied in the execution. Sure, the black and white will always be there, but there are alternate hosts, settings, and eras in time. Perhaps it is important to remember that whilst “we are Venom”, the name will always follow the Symbiote itself. - 90

Marvel Comics is celebrating Symbiotes this summer, and while it’s thanks to Venom reaching his 35th anniversary, most of the festivities seem more Carnage related. That is, until today, when Extreme Venomverse #1 kicks off an anthology series featuring different riffs on Venom. In the first issue, we get tales from Ryan North and Paulo Siquera, Mirka Andolfo and Nico Leon, and Leonardo Romero with inks by Roberto Poggi. All told, these tales reveal a larger story is afoot, which isn’t always the case with anthology comics. (...) Extreme Venomverse #1 is an exciting start to a new way to celebrate Venom. It promises big swings with new takes on Venom and the start of a bigger story to keep coming back for. - 82
Comic Watch
Extreme Venomverse feels unique amongst the plethora of comics built around the concept of a multiverse. Multiversal expeditions have experienced a massive spike in relevance within the past two years, becoming a media subgenre, and with that newfound popularity comes new storytelling cliches and conventions. Consumers have come to expect bombastic tales that explore the most outlandish alternate universes or timelines. Venomverse chooses to lower the stakes for three humble narratives connected by an invisible thread. (...) Extreme Venomverse #1 is surprisingly grounded and humble for a comic featuring a character named "Samurai Venom." The writing team avoids the easy route and instead uses the multiverse to offer interesting new perspectives on familiar characters. - 70

As far as collections of short stories from strange settings go, Extreme Vennonverse #1 does a great job of showing how diverse the symbiotic antihero can be. I for one can’t wait to see what weird wonders these talented teams will weave us in the next installment. - 40

Using various parts of Venom's history as jumping off points, Extreme Venomverse aims to tell a handful of different Symbiote stories with different versions of Venom. This should be a playground to explore new facets of the character and break some new ground, but it all largely feels like retread of things we've already seen before.
