THE ONE TRUE KING RETURNS! is a fantastic issue that continues this story brilliantly. I love how we are seeing Merlyn and Arthur portrayed in a completely different light to what we have gotten used to. I also loved the duel between Betsy and King Arthur as we are basically seeing Betsy take on the old King without the magic of the Citidel to back her up. The final few pages are breathtaking and leave us with a fantastic cliffhanger. But as we get reminded of in the issue. Betsy Braddock always comes back. - 90

'Excalibur' continues to dig deep to show love to all the magical and fantasy continuity and lore from Marvel's past as the war for Otherworld takes a decided turn. Not an ounce of page space is left unused as the artistic team brings their A-game as usual, giving us one of the most gorgeously detailed books around. - 76

Im very curious how this end scene sets up an issue of Betsy and Saturnyne being separated from the team. Its no secret that Excalibur still has their suspicions about Saturnynes intentions. Maybe the two being stranded is what they will need before going forward. - 60

The battle for the Citadel and Avalon drive the stakes in Excalibur as high as they've ever been (complete with some exciting new charts at the end) and maintains a tight focus on a team battling back-to-back against overwhelming odds. Yet in a world filled with magic each turn of the battle seems driven by plot rather than character or any mechanism of suspense. Things happen when it's convenient for them to occur and most of the big twists in this battle are explained as they occur. It deflates the proceedings, especially as it becomes clear the narrative is shifting into a holding pattern by its end. There are notable shifts in the power dynamics and a thrilling story is laid out ahead, but here it's a matter of arranging the pieces of that story as performed by magic, both literal and metaphorical, which isn't nearly as exciting.
