With The Avengers: War Across Time #2, Paul Levitz delivers a great sophomore issue to what is shaping up to be a classic Avengers series. The Avengers’ dynamics are explored in the midst of the action, and it progresses the storyline, even if some might say it was filler material since the main adversary, Kang, was not featured.

Like the first issue of Avengers: War Across Time, writer Paul Levitz and artist Alan Davis are creating a comic story that feels like a truly classic adventure in visual style and tone, just with modern comic book motifs. All this is to say that the plot itself isn’t much to write home about, but it remains engaging from an artistic point of view and at the end of the day is something that’s fun to read. Colorist Rachelle Rosenberg is due some credit for marrying the classic look with the modern, giving the heroes and world a pop and making sure to include details that were staples of the era.

In this series the early Avengers intended to take the fight through time to Kang. But in this issue they get stymied by the 1st setback and wind up fighting someone in their present day. And next issue promises the Lava Men as another distraction from the task. So Kang isn’t in *this* issue.

I like the insertion of Sindri as he is a game changer for Thor as he had a hand in creating Mjolnir and can weld the hammer. However, just in two issues, I am ready for this group of Avengers to get an update in both art and personality. I loved my intro to comics, and for some, they may wish to go down memory lane. But for now, Kang needs to get on with a time jump!
